I really enjoyed this newsletter. Will Humble is my hero. Vaccinations were mandatory, with the exception for religious reasons. With the “no reason” to opt out we will see illness and death in the school communities with low vaccination rates. Contagious disease does not discriminate between district, charter or private schools. What a waste of good policy gone to bad. Vaccine skepticism really accelerated with the internet, RFK Jr. (worm brain) and no science-science. Get your children vaccinated and encourage your friends and family. I grew up with polio and MMR fear. Watching a child die from hooping caught is horrific. Are we really willing to go down that road again?
I’m sorry and this is probably a minority opinion, which I often am in that camp but, charter schools make rich people richer and Robb has been a charter supporter since he was with the Goldwater Institute with Jeff Flake. I know some schools do a very good job and rate highly, but like district schools there are the good and the not so good. But when charters are bad owners walk away with tax payer dollars. Primavera for one. The scams around charters are a waste of taxpayer dollars but primarily a waste of a wonderful mind.
One of the saddest consequences of public health officials dereliction of duty in connection with Covid and the Covid vaccines has been generalized vaccine skepticism, resulting from the realization young children were needlessly exposed to an experimental vaccine with no meaningful risk/benefit assessment. Appointing Jay Bhattacharya to lead NIH is a huge step in the right direction. A true scientist, credible and humble, he represents our best hope of restoring public faith in the public health apparatus.
I love you guys, but please stop saying that charter schools often do not enroll special needs students. I work with many charter schools, and that is just not true. Private schools get to decide who to enroll, but as public schools, charter schools do not.
